The Day After the Fourth in Hudson

On the eve of the Fourth of July in 1917, the Hudson Evening Register urged, "Let 'safe and sane' be your motto." On July 5, the paper reported that the holiday had in fact been "safe and sane."

It seems the bar for "safe and sane" back in 1917 was set pretty low.
