The Columbia County Department of Health has not yet released its numbers for today, but the data for today being published by New York State indicates that, in the past 24 hours, six people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Columbia County, giving us a positive rate of 5 percent, the highest in the Capital Region.
Columbia County is the hot spot? I'm not surprised after witnessing the shit-show that the proprietor of 345 Warren sponsored/permitted/encouraged on Saturday night. There were at least 40 or 50 people crowded into 2 parking spaces (and oozing into the street), dancing and drinking, many without masks. The HPD came by and eventually got a handle on the situation but whomever thought that was a good idea should be put on oxygen -- they surely need to think more clearly. It seems the only fucks they have to spare are for themselves.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to know whether Backbar hosted the gathering. If so, the State or County should take appropriate action. In any event, the irresponsibility of the people who attended this event is appalling.
ReplyDeleteI think it's pretty clear from the previous comment that it was NOT BackBar.
DeleteOn a related note, I noticed during my bike ride yesterday that Hudson Brewing Company is still shuttered. Perhaps it's gone for good.
ReplyDeleteHudson Brewing Company's license was suspended on May 29. You'll find all the relevant information here: https://sla.ny.gov/news/hudson-brewing-suspension
DeleteTo be clear, the spike of quarantine cases was caused by an event or events before this weekend. Mr Friedman is right though-it is certainly incumbent on hospitality operators to behave responsibly and help manage risk for the community.
ReplyDeleteAs of last week at least one parking enforcement officer was not wearing a mask while walking up and down Warren's sidewalks, not even around his neck. He told me, about 3 weeks ago, "nobody can make me wear a mask," when I asked him whether he was supposed to be wearing one. The 3 other officers seem to don masks regularly. These officers work for HPD. B Huston
ReplyDeleteSo if BB didn't host this event, who did? Who was the organizer and who were the attendees? The event is a reflection of laziness and an attempt at "getting back to normal". If the State is going to hold NYC restaurants for not following the guidelines they should do so throughout the entire state. The reality is there are other places also not following the rules. Check out the parking lot at Upper Warren Street and see if there's any social distancing there. All it takes is one person.
ReplyDeleteIf an event like this is organized by the owner of a business, the government has the authority to shut the business down if the activity poses a threat to health and welfare. The type of business is irrelevant. The harm is the same regardless of whether it is a restaurant, bar or antique store.
ReplyDeleteLast Friday evening at around 5, I was at the riverfront park to meet a friend. When I got there there were at least 70 people - mostly young - very few masks in sight. There was also a cook-out, music dancing and zero social distancing. I asked what it was and was told it was a high school graduation party. When my friend arrived, we went to another location to be safe. I checked when I got home to see if there was a permit for this. There was. I believe it listed 70 to 100 people at the gathering. Are permits being issued without requirements regarding masks and social distancing? I understand that young people will be young people. I do not understand that the city would issue a permit without enforcing health and safety rules. There was no official person there to monitor compliance. I thought at the time, we will see an increase in cases.
ReplyDeleteThe city should not be issuing permits for mass gatherings if they are not going to spell out and enforce health and safety rules.
Morris - I am afraid you are expecting too much from city hall in this little town. B Huston
DeleteAs was pointed out when I asked some of the people who reviewed this, mass gathering permits are approved by the mayor. According to Chapter 199 of the city code, mass gathering permits are supposed to be submitted 120 days before the event. This one was submitted on July 15 and approved on July 20, for an event that took place on July 24.
Deletecity hall dysfunction, writ large. Can't follow their own rules.
