What a Concept

People often complain about the number of properties in Hudson that are exempt from paying property taxes, without actually knowing how many there are. It is generally believed the tax burden in our two square miles is uncommonly heavy on homeowners and businesses because so many properties are off the tax rolls.

Sleuthing through old newspapers on a snowy day today, I found this in the Hudson Evening Register for August 13, 1917. It is a list of Property Exempt From Taxation, which provides the following information: Owner or Owners, Description of Property, Reason for Exemption, Valuation of Property, and Amount of Exemption.

The information was provided by the three assessors of Hudson, whose names and addresses are also given. Is there a reason why in 2015 information about tax exempt properties cannot similarly be made public?
