Help in Navigating the System

Last week, Rob Bujan shared these flow charts on the Hudson Business Coalition list serve. They are from the New York State Department of Labor, and they provide guidance in applying for unemployment insurance. A reader suggested that Gossips publish them for the benefit of anyone who needs to file for employment insurance and has not yet done so. Click on each chart to enlarge.

Yesterday, Governor Andrew Cuomo confirmed that New York State will make an additional $600 payment to all who filed for unemployment, which will be reimbursed by the federal government. The state is also extending the period covered by unemployment benefits for another 13 weeks, for a total of 39 weeks.

  1. Having spent approximately 50 hours going through the unemployment process, I have a tip for those who are self-employed. When you get to the stage where you have to fill out a PUA (after filling out the opening form and speaking with a live rep.), answer the following question "no": "Do you have the ability to work remotely?"
Otherwise, like me, you will be DENIED BENEFITS.
Good luck to everyone applying. It is arduous!
