Unstoppable Stewart's

The Altamont Enterprise reported today, with the comment "Not even a pandemic could keep Stewart's from receiving its variances," that, in a video conference, with thirty-six remote attendees, the Altamont Zoning Board of Appeals granted Stewart's Shops the variances needed to build its new gas station and convenience store: "Majority rules: Altamont ZBA officially signs off on Stewart's variances." Stewart's plans in Altamont involve the removal of a row of century-old pines, as well as the demolition of a two-family house.

  1. What does this have to do with Hudson? Instead of another lazy, one-sided swipe at Stewart's, perhaps The Gossips can look into examples of malfeasance closer to home ... for example, why are certain business and property owners in Hudson proceeding with construction work despite New York's pause on non-essential functions? While The Gossips would have us redirect our attention to a local zoning issue in a far-away town, here in our own community we have plenty of examples of wrongdoing that will, sadly, escape scrutiny. Alas, I guess Stewart's is an easier target.

  2. I agree with Unknown. What would be perhaps more important to follow regarding Stewart's are the "improvements" that are supposed to be installed at the Fairview and Green, the absolute worst intersection in town for pedestrians made even worse now by a busier Stewart's. They have paid the city the money they promised ($200,000?) to improve the intersection, so the issue isn't with Stewart's anymore, just the "Stewart's intersection" and when and if City Hall will actually make any worthy and long-lasting improvements there and how much money (above the $200,000) it will cost taxpayers. Last I heard, the Common Council president was looking into hiring a traffic consultant or some such to figure out what to do (though certainly this is all on hold now).
As far as I can tell, the issue with an expanding Stewart's in Hudson is done. Maybe a regular 6 month check-up on the progress, or lack thereof, at our intersection would be interesting to readers.
