Helping the City Through Its Budget Crisis

In May, Albany mayor Kathy Sheehan announced that she would forgo her salary for the remainder of 2020 to assist with the revenue shortfalls her city was experiencing during the pandemic. Today, Council president Tom DePietro announced that he would reduce his city salary for the year 2021 from $12,500 to $1.

Last week, during the Board of Estimate and Apportionment's review of the 2021 budget for the Common Council, DePietro offered to reduce his salary by $2,500 as a means to cut the budget. Today, the Register-Star reports that he will accept only $1 as his salary for 2021: "Council President DePietro to give up salary."

  1. Good job Tom DePietro. But this is a drop in the bucket compared to the belt-tightening needed by City agencies.
