Happening in Catskill

Tonight, Saturday, May 14, at 7:00 p.m., and tomorrow, Sunday, May 15, at 2:00 p.m., A Bintel Brief will be performed at The Bridge Theatre, 44 Bridge Street, in Catskill. "A Bintel Brief" is translated as "a bunch of letters"--letters to The Jewish Daily Forward from immigrants newly arrived in America. The letters, which typically began "Dear Worthy Editor," sought help coping with the challenges of a strange new life--whether trying to understand the habits of Americans, the complex legal system, or the emotional pitfalls of dealing with employers, and ended up in the hands of Abe Cahan, a founder of the paper and "Dear Abby" to his readers. The tradition went on for more than sixty years.

The staged reading of the letters, with live music, is directed by Carol Rusoff and is presented by Temple Israel of Catskill in partnership with the Bridge Street Theatre. There is no fee for tickets, but donations are appreciated. Reservations may be made by emailing juliegolweitz@gmail.com. Current protocols require proof of vaccination and photo ID at the time of admittance. For more information, click here.
