COVID-19 Update

The Columbia County Department of Health has released its numbers for today. Since yesterday, there has been one new case of COVID-19 and one more recovery, so the the number of active cases remains that same. There are five fewer county residents in mandatory quarantine, and the number in precautionary quarantine remains the same. There has been no change in the number hospitalized with the virus, and, for the seventy-fourth day, there have been no new deaths.

  1. Still no infection rates, despite the importance of the number. As Johns Hopkins says, "The rate of positivity is an important indicator because it can provide insights into whether a community is conducting enough testing to find cases." (https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/testing/individual-states) All we know is that Columbia County has conducted 24,385 tests "to date." What? And we have no idea that the new case just found was taken from a batch of 5 tests or 500 tests. Not having this information should alarm our local educators--and parents--thinking about going back to school.
