The Word on School Reopening

In a press conference today, carried out in a conference call, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that all schools in the state can reopen this fall. New York currently has the best, i.e. the lowest, infection rate in the country, and, Cuomo commented, if schools can reopen anywhere, it's in New York. He called for bringing the same intelligence to school reopening as guided the economic reopening.

Cuomo did make some additional requirements. By the end of next week, school districts must post a specific plan for three components of their reopening plans:
  • Remote learning
  • Testing
  • Contact tracing
Cuomo indicated that the specific plan for remote learning must address equity issues.

School districts are also required to set up three discussion sessions with parents, to take place before the end of August, and one discussion session with teachers.
