The State of the Nursing Homes

The following news release appeared last night on Austerlitz supervisor Robert Lagonia's Facebook page.
FOUR OF FIVE LOCAL NURSING HOMES CONTINUE TO TEST
Four of the five nursing facilities located in Columbia County are conducting testing, said Columbia County Department of Health Director Jack Mabb on Tuesday. "Four of them are working with us," he said.
Mabb reported that as of Tuesday, Livingston Hills had tested 92 of its residents and the bulk of its staff, while the FASNY Firemen's Home has completed testing on one wing, as well as the bulk of its staff, all with negative results.
"Pine Haven had one positive test result from yesterday, along with another death of a resident. However, the resident who died was transferred in, just the day before," Mabb said.
The Grand at Barnwell--testing of both residents and staff continues, Mabb said. "We've had nothing but cooperation from them. I applaud the folks at the Grand--they have a horrific situation on their hands, but they're courageously working to get to the bottom of the situation."
"That leaves Whittier as the only facility to not take test kits," said Mabb. "They are the only facility not working with us. Initially, we were told by someone at the facility that they wanted 180 kits, however, later someone called back to refuse them."
This report raises a couple of questions. On Sunday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced two new protocols for nursing homes: (1) the staff at nursing homes must be tested for COVID-19 twice a week; (2) no patient who tests positive for COVID can be released from a hospital to a nursing home. Given those two requirements, how can Whittier be refusing test kits, and how could someone be transferred to Pine Haven only to die of COVID-19 the next day?

  1. from what i have heard, the two nursing homes with COVID may have accepted transfers of patients from downstate who had COVID.

Whittier did not accept patients from downstate.

does anyone know about the transfer of patients ? it seems contrary to careful partice to bring in sick patients. are we not supposed to quarantine those that are sick ??

  2. It's not surprising. They won't do anything up toward Valatie about the gym that re-opened. And have you seen the lines at DMV? Appointment only is the rule, and that is obviously not happening.
