The Columbia County Department of Health has released its numbers for today, and it seems the post-Thanksgiving surge everyone has been warning about may be beginning. Since yesterday, there have been eighteen new cases and four recoveries, increasing the number of active cases by fourteen to 86. Seven fewer county residents are hospitalized with the virus today than yesterday, but none of them is in the ICU. It has been a week and a day since there has been a death from COVID-19 in Columbia County.
Skipping one Thanksgiving meal can't be that traumatic. Being hospitalized and deathly ill is. Hospitalized! No one suggested that you couldn't share the holiday, just not in person. Surely, the food could be shared with drop offs. Technology offers ways to be together. There were options. Social pressures influence some of us to make silly choices. Can we do better for Christmas and New Years? Vaccines are coming. Surely it's worth the wait.
ReplyDeleteColumbia Memorial will cancel elective surgeries and furlough employees if the positivity rate continues rising. As a community, we can save the jobs of people who work at the hospital by encouraging everyone to get vaccinated, shopping online for Christmas gifts and avoiding large gatherings for Christmas.
