News from the Local Political Scene

On Monday, Sarah Sterling, who has served as supervisor for the First Ward for the past ten years, announced that she would not be seeking reelection in November. Yesterday, Claire Cousin announced her run for the office of First Ward supervisor and launched her campaign Facebook page. Speaking of her reasons for running, Cousin explains:
My goal in running in the upcoming election is to continue the work I have actively been focused on for the past 10 years, and keep focus on issues such as affordable housing, mental health within the community, job creation, police reform, youth programming and finding equitable solutions to protect our community in the face of gentrification. . . . I presently serve as the President of The Hudson/Catskill Housing Coalition and as a member of The Board of Commissioners for the Hudson Housing Authority. I believe that I have successfully amplified the voices of my neighbors and the issues that are important to them, and being elected can only amplify that platform.

In a First Ward Forum that took place on February 2, Cousin accused Sterling of being out of touch with the residents of the First Ward who live in Hudson Terrace and alleged Sterling had "singlehandedly disenfranchised an entire community in the First Ward" by her failure to engage with black and brown residents.

Soon after announcing her run for First Ward supervisor yesterday, Cousin announced that she had been endorsed by the Working Families Party.

Today, Tiffany Garriga, Second Ward alderman and majority leader on the Common Council, announced her run for Second Ward supervisor. Garriga, too, has been endorsed by the Working Families Party.
After eight years on Hudson city council, WFP is thrilled to endorse Tiffany Garriga in her run for Hudson 2nd Ward County Supervisor. Garriga has been a leader in her community before serving in city government and has continued that trend as majority leader for seven years. She's been an outspoken advocate for affordable housing, police reform, accessibility and ADA compliance, and consistently supports the issues that impact the most marginalized in her community.
Abdus Miah, who currently represents the Second Ward on the Columbia County Board os Supervisors, has so far not--at least not to Gossips' knowledge--made known his intention to run for reelection.

  1. Am I correct that Ms. Cousin has run for local office before? No reason not to try again, but just wondering.
