And So It Begins . . .

There was a flurry of activity in the 200 block of Union Street yesterday as workers started preparing the lot that will be the new location of the historic house that once stood at 900 Columbia Street. Stopping by the site last evening, Gossips found stakes in the ground, marking out the placement of the house on the lot.

In May 2012, the Historic Preservation Commission granted a certificate of appropriateness to move the house intact to this location within a locally designated historic district. Since the house was "disassembled" at its original site and will arrive at its new location in bits and pieces, a new certificate of appropriateness will be required for a new house to be constructed from salvaged materials.

At the HPC meeting on September 13, 2013, Rick Scalera, special adviser to the Galvan Foundation, stated that it was Galvan's intention to "reuse the design and specifications of that particular house as well as any materials that can be reused at 215 Union" and assured the HPC that the plans for the "reconstruction" would be presented for a certificate of appropriateness.

  2. The resulting building on Union St ..is far too predictable. That's the problem with Galloway. Why not
just be upfront? All this continual sleight of hand and deception. I am speaking in terms of all of his ventures People enabling him ,will fight to let him have whatever he wants. People with foresight and are impacted in a negative way, are forced to mistrust and watch his every move. Spend time anticipating his next moves, based on experience with him, and try to prevent things that are very harmful to this city, in the long run.

"900 Columbia Street"... HPC member Rick Rector called the Galvan Initiatives Foundation proposal to move[MOVE] 900 Columbia "a noble and admirable act," and all present agreed. The Mental Health Association is determined to demolish the building; they have steadfastly resisted all efforts to persuade them to spare it.

Code enforcement officer Peter Wurster reported that "MHA is ready to put a shovel in the ground" for their new facility, and when it is completed, they will demolish this building, which dates from the early 1830s, to create a parking lot .
Tom Swope, executive director for the Galvan Initiatives Foundation, said they wanted to "restore [the building] to Greek Revival," but that's an issue for another time.
Mayor William Hallenbeck, who was present at the meeting, chided them for lack of enthusiasm, saying that the proposal to move 900 Columbia Street, thereby saving it from certain demolition, should have been given a standing ovation."

"....Walter Ritchie, submitted on behalf of the Galvan Foundation, requesting an extension of the certificate of appropriateness to move[MOVE] the historic house at 900 Columbia Street to three vacant lots on the 200 block of Union Street. The HPC was grateful for this evidence of Galvan's continuing commitment to saving the house from certain destruction and agreed to extend the certificate of appropriateness to cover the time when Galvan anticipated the move[MOVE] would be carried out--between August 15 and October 15, 2013..."
...."About 1810-1815, Ashley built on the site of what is now 900 Columbia Street one of the two houses that stood on his land. The Federal-style two-and-one-half story brick house has a side-gabled roof, raised basement, and symmetrical five-bay main façade with a center entrance that was originally surmounted by a fanlight. The side elevations, each with two chimneys, terminate in gables framed by cornices with returns. The window openings have stone lintels and sills, and were probably fitted with six-over-six-light windows when the house was built."

  3. quotes from Reg.Star 9-12-2013" GalVan defends 900 Columbia Plans"
" Mountainview Masonry and Landscape Supply, the company that dismantled the building, will also do the renovation, Kent said.
“We’re using the plans that were in place for the building as our basis for reconstruction,” he said. The plans are not as old as the building, but of recent vintage; an historical architect will not be employed, Kent said: “A project manager with a background in engineering is working on the project.”
    "Mountainview Masonry and Landscape Supply,
[that lists on their web site, that besides landscaping, they have a demolition service, but nothing about being a construction co.,historic or otherwise] the company that dismantled the building, will also do the renovation, Kent said."[How do you renovate a pile of bricks?]
“We’re using the plans that were in place for the building as our basis for reconstruction,” he said. The plans are not as old as the building, but of recent vintage; an historical architect will not be employed, Kent said: “A project manager with a background in engineering is working on the project.”

[What does a backround in engineering mean?. You are or you're not..
and I would appreciate if anyone could decipher what the following means.]

"We’re using the plans that were in place for the building as our basis for reconstruction,” he said. The plans are not as old as the building, but of recent vintage; an historical architect will not[NOT] be employed, Kent said"
