Historic Architecture in Cookie Dough

This year, the Preservation League of New York State joined some of its New York City colleagues--The New York Landmarks Conservancy, Village Preservation, The Municipal Art Society of New York, Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts, Landmark West!, and Historic Districts Council--to stage an architecturally inspired baking contest for the holidays: The Great Preservation Bake Off. Bakers--amateur and professional--were challenged to create an edible treat inspired by a favorite historic New York building or structure.

Entries, in the form of photographs of the confectionery constructions, were submitted this past Monday, and yesterday, the Preservation League announced its winner: "Crown of New York City," created by Hudson's own cookie artist Pooky Amsterdam.

Amsterdam's creation, made up of iconic New York City structures depicted in butter cookies, now goes on to compete with the winners from the other six preservation groups. The seven finalists will be judged by a panel of architects and bakers: baker Fany Gerson; Eric Haugen, chef at the Lambs Club; and architects Liz Diller and Pamela Jerome. On Wednesday, December 16, the overall winner of the Great Preservation Bake Off will be announced.
