Just So You Know

This message appeared today on the Columbia County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

  1. I wonder if they consulted the local doctors and nurses who struggle every day to keep Covid patients in Columbia County alive.
Honestly, what a load of horse manure.

  2. Believe it or not, I know people working at Columbia Memorial Hospital who oppose the medical experts' advice to avoid extended family gatherings this Thanksgiving. If people who work at the hospital have no common sense, then doctors, nurses and the rest of us are doomed.

  3. How would the Sherriff's Office feel about citizens obeying the law selectively?

  4. I’m not sure but I think choosing to not enforce something that would infringe on people’s constitutional rights is a smart thing. Will they enforce this law during the next rally or protest. If this is a law then why are schools open.

    1. Where did the sheriffs go to law school again? Not sure on what basis they've determined the rules are unconstitutional. Surely the Constitution provides for the federal and state governments to protect their citizens. Otherwise the body of regulatory law that is responsible for our buildings not collapsing on our heads, our clean air and water, etc. would be unconstitutional. And they patently are constitutional. Ergo . . .. So, again, how do the sheriff's decide something like this is unconstitutional? It's just noise.

  5. Coming from a lawyer. You know better this could not stand. And veggie. Let me guess have you ever gotten a warning instead of a ticket. Or better yet do you have a car dealership plate cover? That’s against the law. But you have never been ticketed for that. Let me guess is this a republican/ Democrat thing. Plenty of democratic sheriffs are doing the same.

  6. To answer your questions, no and no. Democrat or Republican, if any sheriff's office is doing this they are not fulfilling their main job responsibility of enforcing the law. (So your guess is wrong.) Nowhere in their job description does it state that they are to determine the laws that they think are worthy of enforcement, and those which aren't.

    1. Though that’s not entirely true, either (your second point): we do expect police to exercise reasonable judgment and discretion in their duties. That’s why unilateral decrees such as the one at issue are so ill-advised. On its face, the limitation seem difficult to impossible to enforce. Thus any attempt at enforcement is bound to jam up both the cops and the “perps.” Better to urge citizens to do their patriotic duty: stay home.

    2. Well put, John. I agree wholeheartedly.

  7. I’ll agree to disagree. We won’t be able to see eye to eye on many things. Doesn’t mean that either of us is right or wrong. They do say to me mindful in the post. Have a Happy Thanksgiving if your having a gathering or not.

  8. I’m not at all surprised that the sheriff’s department doesn’t want to enforce the law when it comes to social gatherings. But what is notable is that they felt the need to publicly announce it! What a bizarre post. Trump politicized COVid and his worshippers followed suit.
