Reducing the Speed Limit in Hudson

At the informal Common Council meeting in November, Alderman Dominic Merante (Fifth Ward) continued his efforts to get the speed limit in Hudson reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph. Jeff Baker, counsel to the Council, outlined two possible courses of action: reducing the speed limit in specific areas, or reducing it throughout the city. The latter, which is what Merante advocating, would require a home rule message to the state legislature and an act of the state legislature. At the informal Council meeting tonight, a resolution authorizing and encouraging Mayor Kamal Johnson to write a letter to Assemblymember Didi Barrett requesting such legislation will be introduced. The reduction of the speed limit would not apply to the state highways that pass through Hudson.

  1. A much needed intervention. Thank you, Dominic, for continuing to push on this.

  2. Indeed, throughout the City, please. Upper Union Street is outrageous, like a race track.
