On the Political Scene

Last week Monday, Mayor Kamal Johnson announced that Michael Chameides was leaving his job as mayor's aide. His last day would be Friday, June 11. Yesterday, June 14, Chameides announced on social media that he had started his new job as Program and Communications Manager with Rural Democracy Initiative

When he made the announcement, Johnson said he would selecting Chameides' replacement as mayor's aide "in the coming weeks." The rumor around town is that Michael Hofmann, who is challenging Heather Campbell to be city treasurer, is to be the new mayor's aide. If this is true, the mayor seems to be postponing announcing that appointment until after the primary on Tuesday, June 22, which will decide if Hofmann or Campbell will be the Democratic candidate for treasurer.

If you are a registered Democrat in Hudson and are unsure of the qualifications and goals of the two candidates vying to be city treasurer--Heather Campbell, our current city treasurer, and Michael Hofmann--an article comparing the two appeared in the Register-Star yesterday: "Campbell faces challenge from Hofmann in primary." It is recommended reading before casting your vote.

  1. Perhaps I am getting to old,but there was a time when you could look at a person and size them up. Especially when they were looking for something like a job they were not qualified or competent to get. I see Mr Hoffman as another socialist lackey.

    1. There was never a time like that. It was just your ignorance.

  2. Although I’m pretty new here, Campbell seems to be the only person in city elected government with any competence - which is really the main thing you need in this role. As for Hofmann’s “platform,” good grief! It reads better as some kind of parody or performance art. Speaking as a Democrat, can we not let the woke crazies take over our party like the Republicans have succumbed to their nutters?

    1. I have been following Hudson City government, the finance committee, and the Common Council for years. You are dead on-Heather is a consummate professional with the skillset and experience for the job. She is a fantastic asset to the Hudson community.

And yes, her opponent's platform does seem to have 'Good Grief' splattered all over it.

    2. Agree with Union Jack on not letting the woke crazies take over the party. Only issue with Heather is that she would like the Youth Department gone, from what I've heard. Don't think she has any influence in that regard, but if that's her thought, it's really a shame.

    3. Heather Campbell submitted this response to MS:

As many of you know, I don't usually respond to commentary, but this was brought to my attention and merits an exception. I support the Youth Department and believe that like any other City Department, it should be subject to good governance, appropriate budgeting, competent staffing and transparency with the public. I'd also like to see the building better utilized during free hours with programming like job and vocational training. I know the Youth Department will flourish under the new director, Liz Yorck, and look forward to working with her.
